Trend analysis is a method used in technical analysis which, attempts to forecast future stock price movements based on recent observations of trend data. The study of trends is premised on the idea that what has happened in the past gives traders an idea of what is going to happen in the future. Three main types of patterns which exist are: short-, intermediate- and long-term.

Trend analysis is based on the idea that what has happened in the past gives traders an idea of what will happen in the future.

A trend is the general direction the market is taking during a specified period of time. Trends can be both upward and downward, relating to bullish and bearish markets, respectively. While there is no specified minimum amount of time required for a direction to be considered a trend, the longer the direction is maintained, the more notable the trend.

The change mentioned here is in hourly basis. It is calculated from the price the market had closed the hour before. Lets say the market is trading at 100.8 now and the previous hour closing price was 100, the market has moved +.8% above the previous close(previous hourly candle close) in the last hour.

An hour later from now if the market trades at 99.59, percentage change in the last hour would be calculated as [(99.59-100.8)/100.8] which will be -1.2%.

Generally when someone does not mention the time frame the percentage change will be from the previous day's closing price.

It is calculated based on the previous day close and today’s close.

Percentage change = ((Today close - Yesterday Close)/ Yesterday Close)x100
